A tragic story, both poetic and polemic, about an alcoholic mother and two daughters in a small community, where highs and lows, cruelty and comedy always take their turns. The Mother is a witty and rather unconventional woman, smart and sardonic talker, “the n*gger of the village” as she calls herself. Birge is her oldest daughter, the rebellious one, and Ruut is the youngest, an unofficial dealmaker between her sister and Mom, who’s always initiating all the recurring fights in their family. But deep inside Ruut is a sharp-tongue and genuine young girl, whose observations on characters and story incidents are always pitiless (even to herself) and truthful.
